I’m a fashionable, yet hairy, single Muslim gal

Every now and then I’ll have a period of a couple months where I’ll receive the same ad, everywhere I go. One time Mr. Web thought I was extremely hairy(??!), so he kept offering me mass hair removal products.

I can’t figure out what I’ve said or searched for this time that would be causing me to have nothing but single Muslim dating sites advertised to me for weeks on end. Weeks, I say! I asked a girl at my work who actually is Muslim if she gets these ads, and no, she doesn’t. It’s just me. All day, every day.

(Btw, totally listen to that Kooks song. In fact, I’ll link to it at the bottom of this post so you can listen NOW!)

On occasion I’ll get an ad for Banana Republic skirts I’ve already purchased. I kind of feel like if it’s all-knowing enough to know specifically which skirts I viewed, it should know enough to know that I clicked “add to shopping bag,” and know not to show them to me again and again. And again.

The only thing it gets consistently correct is that I love Back to the Future. For years I’ve had ads trying to sell me BTTF merchandise.

So, according to the Web I’m a fashionable single Muslim girl who loves Back to the Future and is extremely hairy.

As promised:

I love ads. Anyone else have any mystery ads appearing?

Top 10 Christmas Songs

I know Christmas songs. I start listening to them in October every year, and sometimes during the year when I need a cheery boost. (btw, welcome to my new ridiculously Christmas site)

I love Christmas so much that I had a photo shoot with my sister a couple years ago where we dressed up in Christmas stuff. I guess that’s the word. Anyway, here you go:

I’m gonna go ahead and say these are in no particular order, because I think I truly love them all equally. I’m sure I missed one that’s also my favorite, but whatever. These are 10 good ones in any case.

1. Happy Holidays, from the Fred Astaire/Bing Crosby movie Holiday Inn. I am in love with this version.

2. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, by Andy Williams

This song gets me going every time I hear it. My joy meter goes from 0 to 10 in about one second when I hear the opening notes.

3. Santa Claus is Coming to Town, but only by Ella Fitzgerald

I normally don’t love this song, but Ella’s version is simply fantastic.

4. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

I can’t decide if I prefer Judy Garland’s version or Ella’s! Which do you prefer? Judy’s is slow and sad, but Ella’s is fun and, well, pretty much amazing like every other of her songs.

5. Baby it’s Cold Outside

Love it.

6. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

I’ve always loved The Nutcracker and have seen the production twice. I even performed one of the songs in a ballet recital when I was about 7 or 8.

7. The Christmas Song

8. Carol of the Bells

This has always been one of my favorites, and whenever I hear it I think of the Tim Allen movie The Santa Clause.

9. Fa la la, by Justin Bieber and Boyz II Men

A surprise entry into my top 10 list! I was never a Bieber fan, but once I heard his duet Christmas song with one of my all-time favorite bands, Boyz II Men, I was hooked. This song will remain one of my favorites for a long time. I’ve already blogged about it once, so this makes its second appearance on ye olde blog.

10. All I Want for Christmas is You, by Mariah Carey.

Coincidentally, Justin Bieber also carries this tune on his new Christmas CD. I’ve had Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas CD since I was like, 12. I’m never getting rid of it.

A thing I hate and a thing I love.

Hate:

“I’m cold.”

“Hi, cold! Nice to meet you!”

Oooh that makes me grrr.

I also hate anyone who still answers “what?” with “chicken butt,” or “why?” with “chicken thigh.”

Love:

I discovered a shining gem in the musical world this morning. Even if you’re not a Justin Bieber fan, you’re surely a Boyz II Men fan so you should totally listen to this song. It will shine light into any darkness.

Omg like totally.

Do you ever like a song, get super enthusiastic and then realize when you are talking about it to other people you probably sound like “omg omg like totally!!”

I feel like that about Katy Perry right now. I was never that fond of her. I thought she was OK, but not special. Then randomly I started listening to her on Spotify one day.

Now I want to literally grab people by the collar and say, “OMG HAVE YOU LISTENED TO TEENAGE DREAM??” (her album, not the song)

Seriously, it’s so good. Right up my alley.

Have YOU heard Hummingbird Heartbeat? If not, you can listen to it here.

By the way, even though my friend MP gave me Seasons 2 and 3 of Arrested Development I still totally hate the person who outbid me on eBay. Who the f does he think is? I watched that freakin’ site every other hour and the joy I felt at winning my £1.99 bid was unreal. Then mystery Arrested Development fan outbid me and eBay sent me an email saying I LOST my bid. I know it worked out better for me, but still. What a penis.

Musical oddities

You know how when you are walking down the street and you get a whiff of someone’s cologne or perfume you are taken back to another time and place where someone you were close to also wore that scent? Well, that happens to me, but with music.

Whenever I hear Mariah Carey’s song Hero, I feel like I can taste egg salad, or “egg mayo” as the English would say. When I first heard that song I couldn’t stop thinking about how good it was, and I was also in the middle of an egg salad obsession, so it’s always stuck with me. It’s such a weird feeling in my head, like I’m eating egg salad … but I’m not.

Mariah wants to turn that egg into egg salad.

Another odd thing is Sheryl Crow’s song “All I Wanna Do,” from her first CD Tuesday Night Music Club.

For some reason this song planted itself in some pit in my brain roughly 15 years ago and randomly will pop out and I’ll start singing the song with altered lyrics appropriate for my activity. For example, in Berlin last summer I was waiting for the U-bahn and I became violently thirsty. All of a sudden my head started singing, “All I wanna do, is drink some water … I got a feeling I’m not the only one …”

I hate it. I don’t really hate the song, but I want it to leave my brain because it’s just an average song with no reason to stick with me.

Does anyone else have any musical anomalies?

Somehow I don’t think this Wii game will make it to England …

Wii Country Dance is out today in the United States! I recently bought Wii Just Dance 2 and it’s really fun. See, look how much fun Adrian and my mom are having:

Please, watch the HD trailer for Wii Country Dance so you can imagine how cool I’m going to look dancing in my living room.

Considering the nature of this game, I’m pretty sure that by the time we finally move back home I’ll be able to find this game in the sale bin.

The track list is pretty good, but I definitely could have done better. It includes Miley Cyrus’ Hoedown Throwdown, which if you remember learning the dance is one of my New Year’s resolutions.

If you still aren’t convinced, consider the health benefits. You really get your heart racing. We all worked up a sweat!

Wii Just Dance 2 = fun + healthy! I’m sure Wii Country will be the same!

Why Can’t Marmite Rhyme With “You”

There I was, in my kitchen spreading Marmite on my toast and listening to Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, when I felt that little love feeling in my stomach. I tried to sing, “All I Want For Christmas Is Marmite,” but obviously that doesn’t work.

I hate when syllables get in the way of my music.

I could have stuck with the “you” and sang directly to the jar, but I can’t carry the jar with me everywhere so at some point I’d have to switch to something more descriptive.

In the end all I could do was make my little Marmite jar bounce around and pretend like he was loving the Christmas jingle. I love Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas CD. I’ve been listening to it since I was about 12. I thought I was SO cool when I bought it. So cool.

I LOVE MARMITE OMG. Even their site is fun! In case you didn’t know, Marmite’s whole thing is that you either love it or you hate it. I love it. I LOVE IT.

Go try it today! It’s salty and bitter and filled with all kinds of YUM!
